Computer Technology Access

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

Through the use of powerful computer technology, our students and staff can easily connect to the people and information that they need to pursue learning in challenging and innovative ways. It is our vision that all Rye students will graduate with a significant competitive advantage in the use of computer technology. In addition, our use of computer technology enables us to deliver the highest levels of efficiency and effectiveness in our business/management applications.
The Statistics
Today, our technology-enriched learning environment is accessed by over 3,500 users and is supported by almost 900 desktops, 6 file servers, an e-mail server, a web server, a server to support human resources and finances, a server to support student services, and over 200 network applications to support K-12 curriculum. Our district is one of a few in Westchester County to have built a wide area fiber network which provides high speed connectivity between our buildings and to the outside world. Access to the Internet is delivered to each desktop and available to all students, administrators, faculty and staff, when they have a signed Acceptable Use Policy on file. A dedicated professional team of network engineers and building computer aides support computer technology in our schools.
Curriculum Support
Students are exposed to computers and computer applications beginning in kindergarten. Technology is used to support teaching and learning across the curriculum through the use of carefully selected applications that support local and state standards. We continue to support new initiatives which enrich learning for our students including SMART Boards™ to support our K-12 educational program. These interactive electronic whiteboards are touch-sensitive, easy to use, and connect a computer and a digital projector to show computer images. Applications are controlled from the display and bring innovative ways for students to engage in collaborative learning. In addition, we now have wireless laptop carts in our HS Science program and in our elementary schools to enhance the 4th and 5th grade science and elementary school writing programs. High school students are engaging in laboratory work using probes connected to laptops and desktops connected to SMART Boards™. Their textbooks are supported by electronic materials and many are available on CD-ROM. Our high school science classrooms are superior examples of the evolution that has taken place in teaching and learning through computer technology.
Administrative Technology
The student data management program, Power School, supports our ability to manage student data ranging from demographics to progress and achievement and helps the District improve instruction. Other programs, such as Finance Manager, enable enhanced bookkeeping, records management and report generation in both the human resource and business departments, and improve efficiency. Advanced library systems have streamlined cataloging and tracking library materials and support search engines that aid in research and reporting functions. This school year the District converted to a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone system to save money and improve efficiency.
