Summer Reading 2008
April, 2008

Dear Students and Parents,

Summer will be here before we know it! One of the great things about summer is having more time to read. Our summer reading program is built around the idea of reading for the fun of it.  Each RHS student is required to read at least one book over the summer, but YOU get to choose the book.

Enclosed is an annotated list of choices for all students, grades 9-12. This list was created by a committee of teachers, librarians, parents, and fellow students. There’s lots of variety, so we think you’ll find something you like on the list. You and your parents should be aware that some of the books contain mature themes and language; we have indicated those with an asterisk on the enclosed summary list.

On May 20 and 21, we’ll hold a Summer Reading Book Fair in the library, thanks to Arcade Booksellers. Before then, Ms. Harrington, the librarian, will visit your English class to talk about the books. At the book fair, you will be able to purchase the book(s) of your choice. Of course, copies of the books are also available in our high school library and at Rye Free Reading Room.

After the Book Fair, we’ll ask you to tell your English teacher which book you plan to read. If you change your mind over the summer, let us know by emailing us at rye.summer.reading@gmail.com.

In the fall, your English teacher will ask you to register for a book discussion group. Each book on our list will have at least one discussion leader. Leaders will include teachers from many departments, librarians, administrators, other school staff, parents, and members of the community. One morning in mid-September, classes will be suspended while we all discuss our summer reading. You will be expected to complete the enclosed assignment, bring it with you, and then turn it in to your English teacher.

Have a great summer, and enjoy reading for the fun of it!

Sincerely yours,
