THE EXCELLENCE TEAM

The Osborn School Excellence Team allows teachers and parents to participate in planning and decision-making in ten specified areas of school life, which have been identified by the Rye City School District as the following: Attendance and Discipline, Motivation of Students, Communication, Parental Involvement, Community Involvement, School Climate, Curriculum, School Procedures & Practices, Motivation of Faculty & Staff and Student Achievement.

The Excellence Team consists of our Principal, Ms. Zeppie, three Osborn teachers, and three parents.  The PTO Co-Presidents share one of the parent seats; the other two parents, chosen in a school-wide election held each spring, serve overlapping two-year terms.

The Excellence Team meets approximately six times during the school year.  Parents may raise issues to be discussed by the Excellence Team by means of signed letters submitted to the Excellence Team representatives.  Excellence Teams were established at each school by the Rye City School District in response to the Compact for Learning adopted by the New York State Board of Regents in 1990.

Current Initiatives:
The Excellent Committee is currently working on a program to enhance Osborn School Reading Comprehension Scores focusing on parental involvement.  Each month a book will be sent home with each student accompanied by discussion points along with a “blank journal”.  Each family will be asked to make a family comment about the books’ value and relevancy to their lives. The goal is to encourage and support classroom instruction and supplement classroom activities at home.

Demystifying the ERBs: A Parent’s Guide. 
Learn about the standardized tests Osborn students take each year.  The programs consist of a series of 7-10 minute Podcasts and downloadable text files.  Questions such as test preparation, how to interpret results and purpose of the tests, are explored.  Available topics are:  WrAP, ERB, ELA, Math Test, CTP4 and the Science Test.
