Impressionism
Introduction:
The Impressionism Unit introduces students to the time period, place, reasons for, and individuals who created the form of art known as Impressionism. Students will also learn research procedures, note taking, outline form, oral presentation, what makes an Impressionism painting and music and how to create each.
Impressionism was a newly developed style in Paris, France from approximately 1820-1920. It was a style very diffenent from the accepted Classical style of the time. A small number of men and women invented this new style and created the first Impressionism paintings.

Task:
Students will pick an artist and will use research tools to create note cards on their artist. (Resource Card)

After writing a research paper, creating two pieces of art and a music composition they will orally present to their class, parents and faculty.

Process:
Students will write a research paper and present it orallyin Art. Students are introduced to the impressionism unit in the Art room through a PowerPoint Presentation. The students will practice impressionism techniques. Students will choose a painting that they will interpret in a choice of mediums. They will also create an original impressionist painting of their choice. (Art Rubric)
In music class the students will learn about impressionist style music.  They will create musical compositions which explore some of the techniques used by impressionist composers.  Acoustic instruments and music software will also be used.  Each young composer will also create a musical composition inspired by an artist’s work selected by the student.. At the end of the unit, students will present their oral presentation about their artist, their two works of art and why they are impressionistic. They also will play their pieces of music that they have written with an explanation of what techniques they used.(Music Evaluation) (For further details go to Student/Parent Sign Off Sheet)

Evaluation:
Students research will be graded by their homeroom teachers. This includes their notecards, outline, paper and bibliography . After creating two pieces of impressionistic artwork, students must fill out their Impressionism Self Grading Art Rubric and Question Art Form. Students will be graded on their oral presentation, which includes artist information, their artwork, and their music. This presentation is graded by all the classroom, art and music teachers and students.

Extentions:
A visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to view the collection of Impressionist artists. The students will also visit the Museum's collection of musical instruments.
A "Monet Luncheon" at Milton will take students b ack to the time and place of Claude Monet's home. They will experience being in Monet's dining room, eating food that may have been served in his home, viewing his gardens through the windows, French songs, rhymes and the polite conversation of an elegant luncheon.

Conclusion:
At the end of this unit, students will be aware of the movement in art called impressionism. They will have learned the who, where, when and how ofimpresionism developed and how it effected history, art and music. Students will also have learned research and oral presentation skills.
