Tools and Weapons

Algonquin Indians used the resources around them to create tools and items that would help make daily life easier.

Hammocks were hung high in the tree for a young child.
Both large and small hammocks were used by the Indians.
They were made of birch, ash (or mountain ash), or basswood.
The basswood hammock was the best; it did not break so easily.

A backboard was a type of carrier for babies.
It was shaped from a piece of wood.
This traditional form of infant carrier continues to be used today.

Algonquins used natural resources around them to hunt and fish using spears, paddles, nets, the different traps.
Fishnets were made from willow bark, interlaced.
The teeth were used in bending the bark, and splicing it.
