Nine Planets

Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion

Introduction: Thousands of objects, including nine planets, move around the sun. The planets spin around the sun along orbits, like runners racing around a track. Some planets spin more quickly than others. The planets are moving in the sky all of the time. The sun and the planets are part of what we call the Solar System. Now let's go learn more about the nine planets!

Task: You will be working in groups to find information about one of the planets.

Process:

  1. You should find information about your planet in books from the library and using at least three of the Internet sites found below. Print any articles that you want to use and highlight information that will help you complete the Planet Information sheet. (See teacher before printing.)
  2. Remember to make a resource card for each site or book that you use. You will need this information for a "Works Cited" page that will be handed in with your final project.
  3. You will need to print the Planet Information sheet and find the necessary facts about your planet. Any other information you include will add interest to your project. Check with your teacher after you have completed this step.
  4. You should create a PowerPoint presentation with at least eight slides using the information that you found about your planet. Each slide must include a relevant picture. See PowerPoint Instruction sheet if you need help.
  5. Complete Checklist for your PowerPoint presentation to assure you have included all important information. (Hand this in to your teacher when you are done.)

Conclusion: As far as astronomers know, the only planet in the universe where life exists is Earth. However, the galaxy contains billions of planets that we cannot see, and there are billions of galaxies in the universe. We may never discover if other life forms exist on other planets, but keep doing research and maybe in the future one of you will find out!
